Nationals Preview

Preview - UK Fireball National Championships 23rd - 29th May 2009 at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy.  A Fantastic week on and off the water expected!

Sponsored by Alverbank Sails, Harken, Pinnell and Bax, North Sails, Selden, Speed Sails and Winder Boats

In 2009 the UK Fireball National Championships will be running earlier in the season than in recent years with the European and World Championships being held in La Rochelle, France in August.
The fantastic venue of Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy will play host to a 60+ boat fleet with an excellent weeks racing in store. National Champions Dave Wade/Ben McGrane are back to to defend their hard won national title. Among the challengers are DJ Edwards/Simon Potts and Andy Smith and Jonny Mildred, but with racing having been tight on the open meeting circuit this year don’t be surprised to see some new faces and old hands fighting it out for the top spot.

As always the Fireball class aims to make the national championship as inclusive as possible by ensuring that the focus is just as much on those further down the fleet, as it is on the hotshots fighting it out at the front. We will be allocating boats to the Gold, Silver, Bronze, Classic and Youth fleets within the overall results, so that everyone has something to race for.

In addition the buddy system, which matches boats at the front and back of the fleet, gives the club sailor a chance to learn from a world champion, but also more importantly it enables those new to the class to quickly make friends. The cumulative scores of each buddy pairing go towards the overall buddy prize. In addition there is also the Typhoon Perseverance Trophy, an impressive cut glass Fireball for the last placed boat which finishes every race!

All this is backed up by fantastic social programme and great support from our Sponsors.
