News / Fireball Training at Draycote

Questions and answers with the World Champions

Lead coach Steve Irish ran an excellent and information packed event, for the 50 Fireballers who made their way to Draycote Water for the UK Fireball class training weekend.

The sailors enjoyed a mixture of conditions on the Saturday, black clouds from Mordor brought squalls of hail, which was mixed with bright sunshine and medium winds.

Split into groups each run by experienced Fireball sailors, teams were able to complete a mixture of drills on Saturday focussing on mainly on improving starting.

The day's on the water activity finished with a race won by Tom Castle and Anthony York, sailing a new Fireball which Tom had built himself. That was not the end of events for Saturday though, the evening meal and debrief went on long into the evening!

An early start on Sunday morning saw less wind and Steve was able to demonstrate the similarities between the Fireball and the 470 from his work with the Olympic development squad.

Sunday's on the water session focused on developing improved tacking and gybing skills. With the breeze dying away after lunch, a value packed weekend was brought to a close with a fascinating question and answer session with newly crowned Fireball World Champions Matt Mee and Richard Wagstaff.
