News / Rock Open Meeting Report

3 Day Bank Holiday Event at Rock Sailing and Water Ski Club

Twelve boats turned up for a long weekend in Londoners’ corner of Cornwall (Rock Sailing Club).

Race one stared in 8-12 knots out in the bay and not being able to cross the line on starboard after a windshift. Dave Wade and Andrew Thompson led around the windward mark followed by Tim Rush and Sam Pascoe. James and Dan Ellis, in the association boat, rolled Tim on the 2 sail reach. The second reach was more like a run. Dave watched as Tim and the rest of the fleet dropped down inside them. Tim led around the leeward mark. Sam Mettam and Richard Anderton tried to heat the boat up and do the angle game down the reach, forgetting the most important part to this - you have to be able to gybe. They went splat and broke a pole end and retired. The breeze picked up and Tim went on to win closely followed by Dave.

Race 2 started in gusts of 25 knots. Sam M. led the first lap and luckily for them the reaches were too tight to hold the kite (they had no pole remember). Down the run, Tim sailed inside James and Sam (flying the kite with no pole) who you would think would have the easiest drop to do but went splat again and went home early. James and Tim battled for the lead before Tim took a convincing win with James getting as confused as the rest of the fleet, with the race committee forgetting to put up the 505 flag under the shorten course flag, needing redress to sort the mess out.

Day 2 was held inside as 30+knots was blowing outside with confused seas. We had to wait till 4 for the water to come in. There was only room for a windward leeward rather than the triangle sausage. , but the breeze was up. Dave and Andy and Becky Priest and Tim Saunders lead around the windward mark and went for the tide down wind. Sam M. and Tim R. went for the wind and sailed into 1st and 2nd. Tim briefly passed Sam M., but Sam M. led at the finish which was different today, for some reason.

Race 4 was held in 12-20 knots, with the course having been made bigger.  Sam M. led around the windward mark having hit the left shore. Dave passed 5 boats to lead around the bottom mark. For the rest of the race Dave and Sam M. swapped positions with Sam M. winning, finishing another different way.

Day 3 was held in light winds and short chop with marginal trapezing upwind. Race 5 was closely battled for the first lap between James, Becky and Tim before James got away. The rest of the fleet got tangled up in the 505 fleet as we had a general recall. James went onto win with Becky second.

In race 6 Sam M. led early on closely followed by Tim and James. James went on to win and Tim passed Sam to get 2nd. This meant in race 7 Tim had to make sure James was not 2 places in front and James had to make sure Sam did not win.

In the final race, Tim led for a lap and a half before he found a private hole up wind. Sam M. went over the lay line to miss the hole upwind and took the lead to win the race and take 2nd overall and Tim won by 1 point.
