Wimbleball Sailing Club - 20th March 2011

Colin Jarvis & Derek Jarvis from Porti shead & Peter Smith & Dave Dowling from the home club represent the Fireball Class!

Sunday 20th March saw the annual 'Exmoor Beastie' 3 hour handicap pursuit race take place at Wimbleball Sailing Club. A record number of 65 craft signed in for this race with the slower boats to start first followed by the faster boats at intervals.

But where was the beast? No strong gusts or violent capsizes. It was more like a young spring lamb skitting across the lake and pausing to rest, in a flat calm, once in a while. The day was going to call for concentration and those best able to pick their way round the course finding the best breeze.
Amongst the early starters were the Challengers of the sailability (disabled) siling section, who quickly took the lead at the head of the fleet until they began to be caught about an hour into the race. The first to pass them was Paul Harwood in his Streaker followed by Angus Cook and Tabatha in a Firefly. Two thirds round the first lap Simon Hawkes in his K1 was seen to be catching the leaders and by the time the second lap was half completed he was ahead and maintained this position to the end.

After the boats had been finished , from safety boats , on the water the race officer returned to the race hut to sort out the results. After combining lists the race officer returned to the club house to sort out any remaining hiccups before sorting out the final finishing order.

Congratulations to all the competitors who sailed. Only one retirement out of 65 is good going. Many thanks to all those who helped on the day and to SWLT for their help with safety cover.

At the end of the event prizes were presented by Jonathan Price of Exmoor Ales ( sponsores of the event).
After the prizes had been presented the full results were posted on the notice board so competitors could see there their resuts befor leaving for home.
