News / Preview - UK Fireball Nationals at Restronguet SC

21st- 27th August 2010 at Restronguet Sailing Club

Sponsored by Harken

The UK Fireball National Championships head back to Cornwall for 2010, to Restronguet Sailing Club, near Falmouth.  Older Fireballers were scratching their heads and mentioning something about a Worlds Quali fier back in the day, but for most Fireballers this will be their first visit for a major event. Situated on the Carrick Roads, Restronguet SC has easy launching and a short sail to the main race area in Falmouth Bay. The Carrick Roads providing a back up race area in the event of adverse conditions.

With the 2009 National Championships having been held at the end of May the UKFA were keen to get back to the traditional late summer slot to allow for maximum attendance. On the water expect some great fleet racing in the excellent sailing waters of Falmouth Bay. International travellers will have long since returned from the Worlds expect a full strength UK fleet to be in attendance. Cornwall is an immensely popular venue with Fireballers and expect this year to be no exception.

Off the water the Class Association has been working hard to make sure all competitors have a fantastic week with some great evening social events planned for competitors and their families.During the week there will be an opportunity to visit the National Maritime Museum which is now home to Fireball 0 which was gifted by the Milne Family in 2009.

Every year the Class Association makes sure that the national championship is as inclusive as possible by ensuring that the focus is just as much on those further down the fleet, as it is on the hotshots fighting it out at the front. As always we will be allocating boats to the Gold, Silver, Bronze, Classic and Youth fleets within the overall results, so that everyone has something to race for. In addition the buddy system, which matches boats at the front and back of the fleet, gives the average club sailor a chance to learn from a world champion, but also more importantly it enables those new to the class to quickly make friends. The cumulative scores of each buddy pairing go towards the overall buddy prize. There is also the Typhoon Perseverance Trophy, an impressive cut glass Fireball for the last placed boat which finishes every race!
